New York Legal Aid Internship

To apply to the Legal Aid Society of Rochester for a volunteer or internship, please complete this application and send it to intern@lasroc.org. Thousands of New Yorkers are summoned to court by debt collectors and only about 1% of consumer debt defendants are represented by an attorney. On the other hand, ALL claimant creditors are represented by a lawyer. These accused have no place to turn for legal advice or representation and are forced to conduct the trial on their own. The Volunteer Lawyer for a Day program provides limited representation to these accused during their court appearances. Volunteers receive training in consumer law, on-site support from the coordinating lawyer, and the opportunity to help litigants reunite with their financial lives. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with a client and appear before a judge as part of a one-day supervised program. The falls are in Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. This project is open to law students and lawyers. The position includes the retention of case data in our legal database and other work and projects related to consumer debt, as required. If you would like to explore volunteer opportunities beyond working on a pro bono case or internship, please send volunteer@legalaiddc.org an email. Please include a CV and a brief description of the skills you can bring and the hours you have. Please note that we receive a large number of requests from potential volunteers, so we may not be able to accommodate your request.

But we`d love to hear from you.
